Meditative Skills for Modern Life

Recognizing these individual actions helps us to make wise choices and avoid overload and pain.

My name is Anka. My work life began as a musician 30 years ago in Germany. After that I became a nurse, and after that a Buddhist nun. And now, in addition to being a nurse, I am a coach and meditation teacher. But my “specialty" has always been joy and ease. These were what I was known for when I was a child, these were qualities I brought to performing music, and these were qualities I later came to study deeply as a nun, spending seven years in closed meditation retreat.

I have learned that:

  • You can discover that joy and ease are actually aspects of our natural state, and evolution has given us “natural skills" to return to this state.
  • You can use these skills to free yourself from feelings of lifeless stuckness.
  • Inspiring and energizing experience is very close, wherever you are.

You might already know these “natural skills," but you may be using them haphazardly, maybe even unconsciously. Joy and ease come when you start to apply these skills quite consciously. These skills include:

  • Truly opening to your own experience and to others with natural awareness.
  • Recognizing and enjoying the many mini-breaks that occur during the day, such as time at the stop light.
  • Applying breathing and grounding techniques while you work.

But these are only a few of the skills that improve well-being and outlook. Human evolution has given us an amazingly balanced nervous system that we hardly know. By recognizing the natural signs your body and mind continually offer, you can actively participate in shifting your nervous system towards deeper rest and balanced alertness. This leads to:

  • feeling safer, confident, and more energetic,
  • finding deeper enjoyment of your life's current activities,
  • showing up as the person you actually are, and
  • more easily connecting deeply with yourself and others.
